European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the suspension of retaliatory tariffs on a wide range of US goods for 90 days.
This move follows US President Donald Trump's decision on Wednesday to delay the implementation of higher tariffs for 90 days on dozens of countries, while maintaining a reduced basic tariff rate.
Yesterday, European Union members voted in favor of a tariff package on US goods in response to the White House's tariffs on steel and aluminum, set to take effect on April 15.
In a post on X Thursday, von der Leyen said, “We want to give negotiations a chance. While finalizing the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our Member States, we will put them on hold for 90 days.”
“If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in. Preparatory work on further countermeasures continues. As I have said before, all options remain on the table,” she added.
Earlier today, von der Leyen welcomed the US president's decision to suspend the higher tariffs on dozens of countries, calling it an important step towards stabilizing the global economy.
